Château Ksara Ksarak Arak
Ksarak is the arak from Château Ksara, Lebanon's oldest and largest winery, founded by Jesuit priests in the Bekaa Valley in 1857. Arak is the anise spirit of the Levant, and Ksarak is made the traditional way: white grapes from the Bekaa are fermented and distilled, then redistilled with green aniseed from the Syrian border region, and the spirit is rested in clay amphorae before bottling at 53% ABV in a 750ml bottle.
The aroma is fresh anise with a hint of grape. The palate is smooth and sweetly aromatic, with clean licorice-like anise over a rich grape base and a long, refreshing finish. Serve it the Lebanese way: one part arak to two parts cold water, poured over ice so it louches to a milky white, alongside a spread of mezze, grilled meats and hummus. A great bottle for lovers of ouzo, raki and pastis.
