The Glenlivet is where legal Speyside whisky effectively begins: George Smith founded it in 1824, becoming the first distiller in the parish to take out a government license under the new Excise Act — a move that so enraged his neighbors, still distilling illicitly, that he reportedly carried a pair of pistols for protection for years. The name became so synonymous with quality that dozens of other distilleries appended "Glenlivet" to their own labels until the Smiths won the legal right to be called The Glenlivet in 1884. Today it's one of the best-selling single malts on earth, operated by Chivas Brothers under Pernod Ricard, still drawing water from Josie's Well and using notably tall, lantern-shaped stills that produce a light, clean, fruit-forward spirit — pear, apple, honey, and vanilla are the house signature. The core range runs from Founder's Reserve and the flagship 12 Year Old up through the 15 Year French Oak Reserve, 18, 21, and 25, alongside the Caribbean Reserve (rum cask), the sherry-forward 14 Year Cognac Cask, and increasingly ambitious limited series like Beyond Speyside, which has finished the 12 Year in Provence rosé wine casks. Approachable enough for newcomers, deep enough for a lifetime of exploring.
