The Glenlivet 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve gets its distinctive rich and exotic character from selective maturation, in which a proportion of the spirit is matured in French Limousin oak casks, cut in the Dordogne and more often used to age Cognac. The distillery George Smith founded in 1824 as the first licensed distillery in the Livet valley was among the first to use French oak for whisky, a technique since imitated the world over.
Because Limousin oak's low density lets whisky sink deep into the wood, the maturation is carefully controlled to deliver a pleasing spiciness without overpowering the fruit. Bottled at 80 proof, it offers rich, creamy vanilla, butterscotch and a hint of almond on the nose, then a full, velvety palate of ripe pear, honey, toffee and gentle oak spice, finishing long and warm.
