Puerto Angel Blanco Rum
Puerto Angel is a Mexican cane-juice rum brought to the United States in 2015 by Double Eagle Imports of Alpharetta, Georgia, a craft-spirits importer founded in 2006. It is made the way rhum agricole is made: freshly pressed juice from USDA Organic sugarcane, naturally fermented and double distilled in small batches in copper alembic pot stills. The cane originally came from a distillery-owned plantation in the mountains of Oaxaca, and current releases use cane grown at altitude around Uruapan in Michoacán; the label credits master distiller Lazara Cortes and numbers each bottle within its batch. The Blanco is the fresh expression, rested for six months in American oak according to the brand's launch materials and blended down to 40% ABV (80 proof) for bottling. Rum Journey's review of the Uruapan-cane bottling found vanilla, lemongrass, a hint of dried citrus, and floral cane on the nose; an herbaceous palate with vanilla through the middle and pineapple and orange toward the end over a slightly buttery mouthfeel; and a finish of bitter citrus turning floral. It is built for Prohibition-era cane cocktails: a Daiquiri, a Nacional, or an El Presidente.
