Mount Gay holds a deed dated 1703 and calls itself the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world. Most people know it from the Eclipse bottle behind every bar, but the range has changed more in the last five years than in the previous fifty: a new master blender, the first-ever age statements, and an estate-grown series made from cane the distillery grows itself. This guide covers what's changed, every Mount Gay bottle we have in stock, and which to buy.

About Mount Gay
The distillery sits in the parish of St. Lucy at the northern tip of Barbados. The 1703 deed comes from the original Mount Gilboa estate; the name changed later to honor Sir John Gay Alleyne, the Barbadian who ran it in the 18th century. Rémy Cointreau has owned it outright since 2014. Water comes from a 250-foot well filtered through the island's coral limestone, and the rum is a blend of copper pot and column stills from molasses, aged in ex-bourbon oak.
In 2019 Trudiann Branker became master blender, the first woman to hold the title in Barbados, and she has rebuilt the range since. The core blends were reworked, the distillery bought back 324 acres of the original estate and began growing its own cane, and in 2025 it released the first age-stated rums in its 320-year history. Everything below is bottled without added sugar or flavoring.
Mount Gay Rum in Stock at Chips Liquor
Mount Gay Eclipse
The flagship since 1911, named for the total solar eclipse and Halley's Comet that shared the Barbados sky in 1910. Pot and column rum aged up to two years in ex-bourbon barrels, 40% ABV. A dependable mixing rum for Rum Punch and Rum and Coke, not a sipper, and priced accordingly.
Mount Gay Eclipse Navy Strength
The same Eclipse blend at 57% ABV, the historic proof at which rum-soaked gunpowder would still ignite. This is the Eclipse bartenders want: enough backbone to hold up against juice and ice in a Rum Punch, Daiquiri, Mai Tai, or Corn 'n' Oil. For $15 more than the standard bottle it's the better buy.
Mount Gay Black Barrel
Branker's Double Cask Blend: pot and column rum aged in ex-bourbon oak, then given a second, shorter maturation in deeply charred bourbon barrels, at 43% ABV. The char adds vanilla, toasted spice, and a dark-caramel depth that Eclipse doesn't have. Gold at the 2021 IWSC, and RumX's community pick in the range for cocktails. The Rum Old Fashioned bottle.
Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend
The sipper of the core range and the rum a generation of enthusiasts learned on. The highest pot-still ratio in the lineup, with components aged five to seventeen years in three cask types (ex-bourbon, ex-American whiskey, and ex-cognac), bottled at 43% in a numbered bottle with Branker's signature. RumX's 437 reviewers make it the community favorite for drinking neat.
Mount Gay Exceptionally Aged 15 Year
The first age-stated rum Mount Gay has ever released. Distilled around 2010 on a single column still by former master blender Jerry Edwards, watched over by three master blenders, and bottled by Branker in 2025 at 43% ABV, non-chill-filtered. In Barbados's heat the angel's share runs 10 to 15% a year, which is why 15 tropical years is rare. Only 4,942 bottles worldwide.
Mount Gay Exceptionally Aged 25 Year
The companion release and the oldest rum Mount Gay has bottled: distilled in 1999, 25 years in ex-bourbon oak on the island, bottled at 47% ABV, non-chill-filtered. Only 2,376 bottles exist. Robb Report called both expressions superb. A quarter century of Caribbean aging is almost unheard of, and the price reflects it.
The Single Estate Series
These are the first Mount Gay rums made entirely from cane the distillery grew itself, on the land it bought back. Everything from field to bottle happens in St. Lucy: estate cane turned into molasses at the distillery, fermented, distilled entirely in copper pot stills, aged in ex-bourbon casks on site, and bottled non-chill-filtered at 55% ABV in 700 ml. Single Estate Series #1 (edition 23_01) blends the 2016 and 2017 harvests; 1,200 bottles came to the US. Single Estate #2 (edition 24_02) is the first single-vintage release, entirely from the 2018 harvest, fermented nine days; 5,418 bottles worldwide. Branker called the series as Barbadian as rum can be. These are collector's bottles, and 100% pot still from Mount Gay doesn't exist anywhere else in the range.
