Fortaleza is one of the most respected tequilas in the world, and its story is genuinely remarkable: Guillermo Erickson Sauza is the fifth generation of the family that founded Casa Sauza back in 1873, one of the most significant names in tequila history — but in 1976 his grandfather sold the company, effectively stripping the heirs of their birthright. What the family kept was the original estate and old distillery in the town of Tequila, and around 2000 Guillermo began restoring it by hand, launching Fortaleza in 2005 with one goal: make tequila the way his great-great-grandfather did. Nothing is rushed here. Blue Weber agave matures at least eight years, cooks slowly for 36 hours in a stone oven, then gets crushed by a two-ton volcanic tahona wheel over five or six hours, fermented in wooden vats, and distilled in small copper pot stills. Aged expressions rest in re-chipped and re-charred American whiskey barrels. Every bottle is hand-blown in Mexico and topped with a hand-painted agave stopper. Completely additive-free, and now among the most sought-after tequilas anywhere. The range covers Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo, plus the higher-proof Still Strength Blanco and occasional Winter Blend releases.
