Rhum J.M is a Martinique rhum agricole from the Fonds-Préville estate in Macouba, at the northern tip of the island on the slopes of Mount Pelée. The estate began as a sugar mill in the late 18th century; Jean-Marie Martin bought it in 1845, built the distillery, and put his initials on the rum. The Crassous de Médeuil family took over in 1912, and the Martinique-based G.B.H group has owned it since 2002. Like all Martinique agricole, J.M is distilled from fresh cane juice rather than molasses; the aged rums go into re-charred ex-bourbon barrels, three years for the VSOP and five for the X.O, each with a further year in larger casks.
