Ardbeg sits on Islay's rugged south coast beside Lagavulin and Laphroaig, and it has been making the island's most uncompromising peated whisky since John Macdougall took out a license in 1815 — though illicit distilling on the site goes back further. After Macdougall's death the distillery was co-run by his sisters Margaret and Flora, who may rightfully be Scotland's first female distillers, and by the 1880s it was the most productive operation on Islay. Then it nearly died. The distillery closed in 1981, limped along at reduced capacity through the decade, and shut again in 1996 before Glenmorangie bought it in 1997 and rebuilt it from the ground up. To make sure the doors never closed again, the Ardbeg Committee was founded in 2000 — now a global fan community of well over 100,000 members with first access to limited releases. The whisky is peated to a fierce 50 to 56 ppm, drawing water from Loch Uigeadail, and yet the house signature is balance: smoke and tar wrapped around lemon, floral sweetness, and surprising elegance. The Ten Years Old is the flagship, and the cult classics are Uigeadail, married from sherry and bourbon casks and named World Whisky of the Year in 2009, and Corryvreckan, which took World's Best Single Malt in 2010. Alongside them sit Wee Beastie, An Oa, the 25 Year Old, and an annual parade of experimental Committee releases. Ardbeg even sent whisky to the International Space Station. Owned by LVMH since 2004, still unmistakably itself.
