Old Forester holds a genuine first: in 1870, pharmaceutical salesman George Garvin Brown began selling his bourbon exclusively in sealed glass bottles, signed as his personal guarantee — at a time when whiskey was sold by the barrel and routinely adulterated — making it America's first bottled bourbon. He named it after Dr. William Forrester, a prominent Louisville physician who endorsed the idea of consistent medicinal whiskey (the second "r" was dropped later). It's also the only bourbon sold continuously by the same family company before, during, and after Prohibition, thanks to one of just six federal medicinal licenses in Kentucky, and today it's the only bourbon distilled, aged, and bottled entirely in Louisville. Brown-Forman, the company it founded, is still run by the family. The modern range spans the everyday 86 Proof and 100 Proof, the Whiskey Row Series that lets you drink through the brand's history — 1870 Original Batch, 1897 Bottled in Bond, 1910 Old Fine Whisky, and the 115-proof 1920 Prohibition Style — the annually released, vintage-dated Birthday Bourbon, and single barrel and barrel-strength expressions, all built on the same 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley mash bill. Old Forester's Whiskey Row distillery even houses its own working cooperage. One of the true foundation stones of American whiskey.
