Hibiki means "resonance" or "harmony," and the whisky was born in 1989 when Suntory Master Blender Keizo Saji, wanting to honor the house's blending craft, tasked Chief Blender Koichi Inatomi with creating something new. After tasting hundreds of samples they settled on a blend of around 30 different whiskies — including some aged in rare Mizunara, the notoriously difficult Japanese oak that needs decades in cask before it turns from harsh to extraordinary, giving up sandalwood, incense, and agarwood character found nowhere else in whisky. Every bottle comes in the same 24-faceted decanter, one facet for each season of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar, with a hand-crafted washi paper label. The blends draw malt from Suntory's Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries and grain from Chita, which the blenders describe as the "dashi" — the broth that completes and unifies everything else. Japanese Harmony, released in 2015, is now the foundation of the range: at least ten malt and grain whiskies across five cask types, honeyed and floral with orange peel and a whisper of smoke. Above it sit the legendary 17 Year, discontinued in 2018 when aged stocks ran short and now a genuine collector's item, along with the 21 and 30 Year and limited editions like Kacho Fugetsu and the Mizunara-driven 100th Anniversary Edition. Japan's most awarded blended whisky.
