Springbank Distillery has been under continuous Mitchell family ownership since 1837, making it Scotland's oldest such distillery — and one of the last to handle every stage of production entirely on-site: floor malting, distillation, aging, and bottling, all in Campbeltown, once a thriving whisky region now down to just three working distilleries. Springbank itself is unpeated-to-lightly-peated and distilled 2.5 times, while sister brand Longrow is heavily peated and double-distilled for a damp, earthy smoke distinct from Islay's coastal style, and Hazelburn is triple-distilled and completely unpeated, offering a raw look at the house spirit. Beyond the core 10, 15, 18, and 21 Year range, the distillery runs several genuinely collectible series: an ongoing Sherry Wood Series working through Pedro Ximénez, Palo Cortado, Amontillado, Fino, and eventually Manzanilla casks; a cask-strength 12 Year released twice yearly, each batch a different blend; and Local Barley, grown on specific named Kintyre farms rather than standard commercial barley. Reception across the range genuinely varies bottle to bottle and year to year — Springbank doesn't always disclose exact blend or cask information — but the distillery maintains a devoted following for good reason, with multiple releases earning real acclaim from serious whisky critics.
