Where to Buy Planteray Rum Online: Every Plantation Bottle in Stock and Which Drink It's For

Planteray is the rum range formerly sold as Plantation, made by Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house run by Alexandre Gabriel. The name changed in 2023; the bottles didn't. It's the most complete cocktail-rum lineup in the shop, from a $20 dark rum to a 15-year single vintage, and several of the bottles were designed by committees of the best tiki bartenders in the world. This guide covers how Planteray works, every bottle we have in stock, and which one to buy for which drink.

About Planteray

Ferrand doesn't own a Caribbean sugar estate so much as a method. Gabriel sources rum from distilleries across the islands (and now the Pacific and Indian Ocean), ages it first in its tropical home, then ships it to southwest France for a second maturation in Ferrand's own Cognac casks. He calls it double aging, and it's the signature across the range: tropical heat for extraction, French cellars for polish. Ferrand also co-owns West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, which supplies much of the base rum.

One honest note: some Planteray bottlings carry a small dose of cane sugar, which Ferrand discloses on its website. Xaymaca is labeled zero added sugar; the cocktail bottles below don't need to be sugar-free to do their jobs.

The Cocktail Core (under $35)

Planteray 3 Stars is the white rum: a three-island blend of Barbados, Trinidad, and Jamaica, pot and column, aged and unaged, married in Limousin oak and then carbon-filtered clear. Bottled at 41.2%, a hair above standard, with enough Jamaican funk to give a Daiquiri or Mojito real depth.

Planteray Original Dark is the $20 workhorse: one-to-three-year Barbados rum blended with ten-to-fifteen-year high-ester Jamaican pot still from Long Pond, rested in wooden vats in France. The float on a Mai Tai, the base of a Jungle Bird, and the best Dark 'n' Stormy rum at its price.

Planteray Xaymaca Special Dry is 100% pot-still Jamaican rum from two stills: the John Dore at Long Pond and the Vendome at Clarendon, fermented one to three weeks, finished in ex-Ferrand Cognac casks, with zero added sugar. Double Gold, 92 points, and one of the IWSC's top eight rums in the world in 2023. The funk bottle, and the one to buy if you want to taste what 19th-century Jamaican rum was like for $25.

Planteray O.F.T.D. stands for Old Fashioned Traditional Dark, a 69% ABV overproof blend of Guyana, Jamaica, and Barbados rum that Gabriel built with six rum authorities, including Beachbum Berry, Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove, and historian Dave Wondrich, tasting hundreds of samples until they agreed. It's the default overproof behind serious tiki bars, built for Zombies, Jet Pilots, and floats.

Planteray Isle of Fiji is the South Pacific entry, from hand-cut cane grown in Fiji's volcanic soil, aged first in ex-bourbon casks in Fiji and then in Cognac casks in France, at 40%. Molasses and pear on the nose, vanilla fudge and ginger on the palate, and a very good Daiquiri rum.

The Flavored Rums

Planteray Stiggins' Fancy Pineapple revived a lost Victorian tradition. Gabriel and Dave Wondrich researched original 19th-century pineapple rum recipes and landed on this: Queen Victoria pineapple rinds infused in 3 Stars and then distilled, pineapple flesh infused in Original Dark for three months, the two blended and married in French oak. Best New Spirit at Tales of the Cocktail 2016, and the most imitated rum of the last decade. 40% ABV.

Planteray Cut & Dry Coconut is the coconut rum that takes the category seriously: Barbadian coconuts cracked and sun-dried, then infused into West Indies Rum Distillery pot-and-column rum at one whole coconut per liter. Infused, not flavored. Tastings.com gave it 96 points and Imbibe made it Drink of the Week. Released in limited batches because Barbados only grows so many coconuts.

The Blends and Navy Rums ($45 to $50)

Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum Sail No. 2 draws from five distilleries on three continents (Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana, Mauritius, and a Jamaican blend of Clarendon, Long Pond, and Hampden), aged in open wooden vats in France chosen to mimic the humidity of the old London docks. Bottled at 55.7%. Drinkhacker gave it an A and called it one of the best bargains in rum.

Planteray Sealander is the first rum to combine distillates from three oceans: Barbados on the Atlantic, Mauritius on the Indian Ocean, and Fiji on the Pacific, finished a year in Cognac casks. 92 points from Tastings.com. Christmas spice, gingerbread, and honey, and a conversation piece.

The Sippers ($70)

Planteray XO 20th Anniversary is the bottle that built the brand's reputation, with more than 55 gold medals. Barbados rum aged 8 to 15 years in ex-bourbon casks in the tropics, then up to 10 more years in small ex-Ferrand French oak casks. Vanilla custard, toasted coconut, chocolate, and hazelnut, in the decanter bottle. The rum that introduced a generation to aged Barbados.

Planteray Belize 2008 is a one-time vintage: distilled in 2008 at Travellers Liquors in Belize City, 13 years in ex-bourbon barrels under the Belizean sun and two more in Cognac casks in France, bottled at 48.3% ABV. Honey, toasted oak, banana, and pineapple. One of the oldest expressions of Belizean rum to reach US shelves.
