The name marks the year Kentucky became a state, and the distillery behind it has been running almost that long. Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 in Bardstown — the Bourbon Capital of the World — and remains the oldest fully operating distillery in town, sprawling across 196 acres with 29 barrel warehouses holding over a million barrels, a working still house, and the legendary Tom Moore Spring that has supplied its limestone water since the beginning. Its lineage runs back further still, through nineteenth-century names like Mattingly & Moore and the Willett family, whose Kentucky bourbon dynasty is woven into the site's history. The 1792 brand itself launched in 2002 as the distillery's premium expression and has been owned by Sazerac since 2009. The lineup has become one of the most respected value-to-quality runs in bourbon: Small Batch at 93.7 proof, named Best Kentucky Small Batch Bourbon at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards; Single Barrel; Bottled in Bond; the cult-followed Full Proof; Sweet Wheat; and Aged Twelve Years — with Small Batch, Full Proof, and Twelve Year all taking Double Gold at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In July 2026 the brand added its first-ever straight rye and 1792 XV, its oldest expression to date.
