2XO stands for "Two Times Oak," and it's the comeback project of one of the most talked-about blenders in American whiskey. Dixon Dedman grew up in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, running his family's James Beard Award-winning Beaumont Inn, and in 2014 he resurrected Kentucky Owl — the bourbon his great-great-grandfather C.M. Dedman made from 1879 until Prohibition shut it down in 1916. His high-proof, well-aged Kentucky Owl blends earned genuine cult status before the brand sold to Stoli Group in 2017; Dedman left in 2021 and launched 2XO the following year, naming the debut The Phoenix Blend for obvious reasons. The technique behind the name is the point: mature Kentucky straight bourbon is sourced, then a portion of every blend is re-barreled into new charred oak for a minimum of twelve months, adding sweetness and richness to balance the rye spice — Dedman says it's about the liquid, not the overplayed nostalgic American whiskey storyline. The lineup runs three tiers: the Oak Series (American Oak, French Oak) as everyday pours; the Icon Series of one-off small batch blends, each with its own mash bill and profile and named for something personal — Phoenix, Innkeeper's, Tribute, Kiawah, Vinyl, Sneakerhead; and The Gem of Kentucky, billed as the only double-barreled single barrel bourbon on the market. Serious blending from a serious name.
