Aberlour means "mouth of the chattering burn" in Gaelic, and the distillery has stood beside the Lour Burn in the village of the same name, at the heart of Speyside, since 1879. Its founder James Fleming was a local grain merchant and banker who made a fortune in the late Victorian era and put it back into the town — building Fleming Hall in 1889 and, after his death, the Fleming Cottage Hospital in 1900. His motto, "Let the deed show," is still on the label. A fire destroyed the distillery in 1898 and it was rebuilt by Charles Doig, Scotland's foremost distillery architect, complete with the pagoda roofline that became the industry's visual signature. The house style is sherry: Aberlour has long-standing relationships with Spanish bodegas that keep it supplied with increasingly rare sherry butts, and roughly half its stock matures in that wood, balanced against ex-bourbon American oak in what it calls double cask maturation — dark fruit, toffee, cocoa, and Christmas cake with a distinctive mint-and-blackcurrant lift. The cult bottle is A'bunadh, "the original," inspired by a Victorian-era bottle found in a time capsule hidden in the distillery wall during renovations: cask strength, non-chill filtered, matured solely in Oloroso butts, released in numbered batches that are never the same twice. Around it sits the 12, 14, 16, and 18 Year Double Cask range and Casg Annamh. Owned by Chivas Brothers, and the number-one single malt in France.
