135 East is named for the Akashi Meridian — the line of longitude at 135 degrees east that sets Japan Standard Time, running past the Kaikyō Distillery in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. The distillery is best known for Hatozaki whisky, and it builds this gin the way a Japanese house would: London Dry in structure, Japanese in soul. Classic juniper, coriander, and angelica are joined by sencha green tea, shiso leaf, ume plum, yuzu, sansho pepper, cedar wood, and chrysanthemum, and the base includes distilled sake alongside grain spirit, bottled at 42% ABV. Wine Enthusiast found a lemongrass aroma leading into a lightly sweet, faintly herbaceous palate that finishes with a lingering pink-peppercorn zing. Bevvy's review reads like a map of the botanicals: a citrusy, sharp nose big on yuzu with sencha and juniper behind, a soft, creamy mouthfeel with bright yuzu up front, floral ume and grassy, minty shiso through the middle, then sweet lemon peel and a gentle spark of sansho on a softly spiced finish. Master of Malt's tasters caught cedar on the first whiff and called it an incredible bang for the buck. Honest note: it's softer than a big juniper-forward London Dry, and tonic can cover it — this is a gin for a Martini with a shiso leaf, a Gimlet with yuzu, or a highball with soda and a twist. Japan's east and gin's west, meeting in the middle.
