American Born was founded in Nashville by two men with no distilling background: Patrick Dillingham, a former Notre Dame quarterback, and Sean Koffel, a former U.S. Marine Corps captain and Iraq War veteran. Their company Windy Hill Spirits launched American Born Moonshine in October 2013 — mason-jar corn whiskey in Original, Apple Pie, and Dixie sweet tea flavors — and built it to 25 states within two years on a philosophy of "selling whiskey with a handshake." In 2016 the brand was acquired by Milestone Brands of Austin, Texas, run by Deep Eddy Vodka veterans Eric Dopkins and Chad Auler, who expanded American Born beyond the jar with a line of whiskeys in 2017. The flagship is American Born Bourbon, a proprietary blend of corn and rye grains bottled at 83 proof — a number chosen to honor 1783, the year America's independence was recognized — never chill-filtered, with vanilla, oak, and earthy sweetness finishing on a light rye spice. Alongside it are two 70-proof real-fruit-infused whiskeys: Peach and Apple, both built for easy pours over ice or with lemonade, cola, or cider. The name and the packaging both carry the same idea — bootlegger heritage, Appalachian roots, and an unapologetically patriotic pitch. Approachable, affordable, and built for the tailgate.
