Angel's Envy was a retirement project that became a category. Lincoln Henderson spent nearly forty years at Brown-Forman, where he created Woodford Reserve, Gentleman Jack, and Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, earning a spot in the inaugural class of the Bourbon Hall of Fame. He'd long carried an idea the corporate world never let him try: finishing bourbon in port wine casks. In 2010 his son Wes convinced him to come out of retirement and pursue it independently, and the resulting bourbon launched in 2011 — the first widely available finished bourbon at a time when secondary casks were still considered heresy in Kentucky. The name plays on the "angel's share," the roughly 5% lost to evaporation each year: what's left in the bottle is what the angels envy. Lincoln passed in September 2013, two years into the brand's life, but the family stayed — Wes joined him in the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2019, and grandson Kyle still works production in Louisville. Bacardi acquired the company in 2015, and the Louisville Distilling Company opened its own downtown distillery the following year. Every bourbon runs the same 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% barley mash bill, blended in batches of 8 to 12 barrels. The range spans the flagship Port Finish, the annual Cask Strength, Bottled in Bond, a Rye finished in Caribbean rum casks, and the experimental Cellar Collection.
