Augusta Distillery sits on the limestone banks of the Ohio River in Augusta, Kentucky — a river town in Bracken County that was once the heart of bourbon's original production zone, founded on land donated by Revolutionary War Captain Philip Buckner in 1797. Three college friends, Lance Bates, Robert Burns, and Jeff Johnson, conceived the brand in 2017 with a pledge to bourbon's historical benchmarks: single barrel, cask strength, unfiltered Kentucky whiskey, aged a minimum of eight years, never proofed down. The company launched in 2018 as a bottler of sourced Kentucky stock, and the inaugural release announced itself loudly — Buckner's 13 Year was named World's Best Bourbon at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, one month after the 15 Year took Best Craft Bourbon from the American Distilling Institute. In 2024 a $23 million distillery came online in the restored 1883 F.A. Neider factory building, running two 35-foot Vendome copper stills with a 14,000-barrel annual capacity, led by master distiller Alex Castle, formerly of Wild Turkey and Old Dominick. The range runs from the flagship Old Route 8, an 8-year single barrel named for the scenic river road, through the ultra-premium Buckner's 10, 13, 15, and 17 Year — several in hazmat territory — to the 2026 additions of a Small Batch and the distillery's first Wheated Single Barrel.
