Black Maple Hill is one of the most storied names in sourced bourbon — a label that was never a distillery, yet became a legend. Launched in 2000 by Paul Joseph of California's CVI Brands, its earliest releases were produced by Julian Van Winkle III and are widely believed to have included wheated bourbon from the fabled, shuttered Stitzel-Weller distillery, with later bottlings sourced from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (Willett) carrying age statements up to 22 years. Those tall, age-stated Kentucky bottles built a genuine cult following in the pre-boom era, and today they trade at many multiples of their original prices. When aged Kentucky stock dried up around 2014, production quietly shifted to Stein Distillery in Oregon, and the mystique faded — until July 2026, when Rare Character Whiskey Co. of Lexington, the acclaimed independent bottler behind Pride of Anderson County, Brook Hill, and Old Cassidy, announced it had brought the label home to Kentucky. The revival restores what made the original special: selected Kentucky straight bourbon, the brand's classic 95-proof presentation, age-stated releases led by the 11 Year Small Batch, and strictly limited annual bottlings. A resurrection story two decades in the making, from the team best positioned to do it justice.
