Bladnoch is Scotland's southernmost distillery and one of the oldest in the Lowlands, founded in 1817 by brothers John and Thomas McClelland on the banks of the River Bladnoch near Wigtown in Galloway. For most of its two centuries it was a modest farm distillery, and for much of the last thirty years it was silent: mothballed in 1993, revived briefly by the Armstrong family, closed again in 2009. In 2015 Australian entrepreneur David Prior bought it, rebuilt it from the stills up, and in 2019 brought in Dr. Nick Savage, formerly master distiller at The Macallan, to run the whisky. The result is the rare thing in Scotch today: a fully independent Lowland distillery with genuinely old stock in the warehouse. The house style is light, floral, and grassy, bottled without chill filtration at natural color, and the range is built around two ideas. The Twinned Cask collection pairs that spirit with two cask types each: Vinaya (bourbon and sherry), Samsara (bourbon and Californian red wine), Liora (bourbon and new oak, at 52%), and Alinta, the distillery's first peated whisky. The Heritage Collection carries the age statements, from the bourbon-matured 13 Year Old through the Oloroso-sherried 16 and the Pedro Ximénez 19 to the 30 Year Old, distilled before the closures, and the Talia 25.
