Andrés Brugal Montaner left Catalonia for Cuba as a young man, learned sugar and rum there, and in 1888 settled in Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic's north coast, founding the company that still bears his name. The house is now on its fifth generation of maestros roneros, led by Jassil Villanueva Quintana — great-great-granddaughter of the founder, the first female master rum maker in the Dominican Republic and, when appointed, the youngest in the world. The style is classic Spanish-Caribbean: molasses from Dominican sugarcane distilled clean on multi-column stills to produce a light, elegant spirit, then aged in white oak. What genuinely sets Brugal apart is cask access — since Edrington bought a majority stake in 2008, making Brugal a stablemate of Macallan and Highland Park, the brand has had deep supply of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, which are notoriously hard to source in rum. That shows in the signature double aging behind the flagship 1888 Doblemente Añejado, awarded 93 points by both Wine Enthusiast and the Ultimate Spirits Challenge plus a Gold from the Global Rum Masters. The range runs from the everyday Añejo and Extra Viejo through 1888 and the innovative Colección Visionara, built on aromatic cask toasting — a technique Villanueva pioneered.
