Caterwaul is the collaboration between Matt Hardin, a sixth-generation Napa Valley grower whose family roots run back to Pope Valley, and Thomas Rivers Brown, the winemaker behind Schrader, Rivers-Marie and Outpost and credited with dozens of 100-point scores. The stated goal is vintage-transparent wines from great vineyards at prices far below what Brown's name usually commands, and critics have called the line one of the valley's greatest values.

We carry three bottlings. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon pulls from Oakville, Coombsville and Calistoga for valley-floor polish and cooler-site acidity; Jeb Dunnuck rated the 2023 92-94 points for its creme de cassis, graphite and sweet tobacco. The Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-appellation cuvee from Wilsey Vineyard that earned 96 points from Dunnuck for its chocolaty dark fruit and polished, full-bodied palate. The Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is anchored by the volcanic Bavarian Lion Vineyard in Knights Valley, and Wine Spectator gave the 2023 91 points for its violet-tinged cassis and cherry puree.
