Clos Pegase was founded in 1984 by publisher and art collector Jan Shrem, who commissioned postmodern architect Michael Graves to design its landmark Calistoga winery through a San Francisco Museum of Modern Art competition. The building doubles as a contemporary sculpture museum and remains one of Napa Valley's most photographed estates. The program has refocused on estate farming at the warm northern end of the valley, where volcanic soils and hot days cooled by evening breezes give Cabernet ripe, generous fruit backed by firm structure.

The Clos Pegase Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the house's core red, blended principally from Cabernet with small amounts of Bordeaux varieties and aged in French oak, a portion new, for well over a year before bottling at around 14.5% ABV. Expect black cherry, cassis and cedar in a full-bodied, classically styled Napa Cabernet. Hommage is the flagship, an artist-series bottling named in tribute to Shrem's late wife Mitsuko and drawn from the top blocks of the estate Tenma Vineyard in Calistoga, aged in predominantly new French oak and showing ripe plum, blackberry, black currant, espresso and dark chocolate.
