Cruzan is named for the people who make it: "Crucians," the residents of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The site itself dates to 1760, when a sugar mill began crushing cane at Estate Diamond, making it one of the oldest continuously operating rum distilleries in the world — and the great house, old mill, and 19th-century chimney are all still standing on the grounds. The Nelthropp family has lived on St. Croix since the early 1800s and has run the distillery since 1950, when Cedric "Ceddie" Nelthropp installed the continuous distillation columns that came to define the house style. Eight generations on, Gary Nelthropp serves as master distiller and president, his brother Donnie as master blender, and their sister Karen runs guest experiences for the 35,000 visitors a year. The style is deliberate: five-column distillation to keep fusel oils out of the barrel, aging in charred oak in the tropical Caribbean heat, then charcoal filtering. As Gary puts it, alcohol shouldn't burn — it should be light. The range spans Aged Light and Aged Dark, the 5-to-12-year Estate Diamond, Black Strap, Single Barrel, 151, and one of the broadest flavored lineups in rum.
