Evan Williams was a Welsh immigrant who settled near Louisville and, in 1783, opened Kentucky's first commercial distillery on the banks of the Ohio River — nearly a decade before Kentucky was even a state. Heaven Hill revived the name in 1957, and it worked: Evan Williams is now the second best-selling Kentucky straight bourbon in the world, distilled in Bardstown and celebrated at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, the first distillery on Louisville's Whiskey Row, just blocks from where the original stood. The whole line runs on Heaven Hill's traditional mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, and the reputation is built on genuine value rather than hype. The Black Label at 86 proof is a benchmark everyday bourbon; the White Label Bottled-in-Bond at 100 proof is one of the most consistently praised value bottles in American whiskey, from a distillery that produces more bottled-in-bond whiskey than anyone; and 1783 Small Batch, honoring the founding year, is pulled from fewer than 200 barrels of extra-aged stock, running roughly six to eight years at 90 proof and winning a Consumers' SIP Award. At the top sits Single Barrel Vintage — the only vintage-dated single barrel bourbon on the market, hand-selected, wax-sealed, and labeled with barrel number, fill date, and bottling date.
