Ezra Brooks was created in 1957 by Frank Silverman, and the origin is a piece of genuine bourbon lore: the brand was essentially designed to look and drink like Jack Daniel's — squared bottle, black label, charcoal filtering, Kentucky sour mash — at a moment when Jack was on allocation and hard to find. Like the Tennessee whiskey it once shadowed, every Ezra Brooks bourbon is still charcoal filtered for a mellow, rounded finish, and that consistency has kept the brand a shelf staple for nearly seventy years. Luxco, the family-owned St. Louis spirits company, acquired the name in 1993, and for decades the whiskey was sourced from Heaven Hill before Luxco built its own Lux Row Distillers in Bardstown in 2018, where Ezra Brooks is now produced under master distiller John Rempe alongside Rebel, David Nicholson, and Blood Oath. Luxco merged with MGP Ingredients in 2021. The range starts with the flagship Kentucky Straight Bourbon and steps up to Ezra Brooks 99, launched in 2021 as a higher-proof version delivering caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and spice at 99 proof, plus a 51% rye-mash 99 Rye and a Port Wine Cask Finish. The prize is Old Ezra 7 Year Barrel Strength — aged seven years and bottled uncut, it landed at number seven on Whisky Advocate's Top 20 Whiskies of 2019 with 94 points, and remains one of the best-value barrel proof bourbons in Kentucky.
