Hendrick's launched in 1999 after Charles Gordon, then president of William Grant & Sons, tasked chemist Lesley Gracie with creating a gin that broke every convention of the category. It took eight months of distilling and blending — including plenty of botanicals that simply didn't work — before landing on the recipe that would help kickstart the modern gin boom: 11 botanicals distilled in two antique stills, a Bennett and a Carter-Head, then infused with cucumber and Bulgarian rose. Everything is still handcrafted in small batches of just 500 liters at the Hendrick's Gin Palace in Girvan, Scotland, and the brand now sells more than a million cases a year. Gracie, inducted into the Gin Magazine Hall of Fame in 2021, has kept innovating since — the Cabinet of Curiosities series has produced limited releases including Orbium (quinine, wormwood, blue lotus), Midsummer Solstice, Amazonia, Lunar, Neptunia, Flora Adora, Grand Cabaret, and Oasium, many drawn from her own botanical expeditions, including a two-week trip through the Venezuelan rainforest. In 2026, the brand added Another Hendrick's, its first new permanent expression in nearly a decade, layering cacao and orange blossom over the signature rose and cucumber.
