Home Base Spirits is a female-owned craft whiskey company in Berkeley, California, founded in 2015 by Oakland-raised twin sisters Ali and Sam Blatteis. Inspired by a 2011 distillery tour that framed whiskey as an agricultural product capable of supporting local farms, the sisters spent years in distilling coursework and on family farms before launching. Ali is the blender; Sam leads sourcing and storytelling. They also founded a women's whiskey club.
The house style is grain-forward California whiskey with radical transparency. Home Base buys organic corn, barley and wheat from Northern California and Oregon growers and craft maltsters like Admiral Maltings and Mecca Grade, has it distilled at Bay Area partners such as Corbin Cash and Sutherland, then matures and blends everything in its Berkeley warehouse in new char #4 oak or ex-Home Base Bourbon casks. Every batch label lists the farms, maltsters and distillation dates. The spirits are Craft Malt Certified and Verified Water Certified, and the single malt won a 2023 Good Food Award.
The range covers the flagship Bourbon, Cask Strength Bourbon, Single Malt, a bottled-in-bond California Corn whiskey, special releases, and two Bitter liqueurs built on California grape brandy.
