The name comes from a genuinely good story. John E. Fitzgerald was a bonded treasury agent in the 1870s with keys to the rickhouses — and legend holds he used them to pilfer whiskey from the finest barrels he could find. Those barrels became known as "Fitzgerald barrels," and the whiskey inside was eventually bottled under his name. Heaven Hill launched Larceny in 2012 to carry that story forward with its wheated bourbon recipe, replacing rye with soft red winter wheat as the secondary grain — 68% corn, 20% wheat, 12% malted barley — for a rounder, softer, sweeter profile than traditional high-rye bourbon. The Small Batch is drawn from fewer than 100 barrels aged six to twelve years and bottled at 92 proof, delivering caramel, vanilla, honey, and baked bread with a gentle finish. Larceny Barrel Proof is where the brand made its name with enthusiasts: released three times a year in A, B, and C batches, uncut and unfiltered, typically landing between 120 and 127 proof — and Whisky Advocate named batch B520 its Whisky of the Year in 2020, an extraordinary showing for a bourbon at its price.
