Mason Cellars was founded in Oakville in 1993 by Randy and Megan Mason. With more than four decades of Napa Valley winemaking behind him, Randy still makes classically styled wines built on long-term grower relationships rather than flash, and the results consistently punch far above their price.

The Mason Cellars Pelissa Vineyard Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is the top of the range. Pelissa is a 60-acre Oakville vineyard planted to old BV Clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon, named for Andrew and Babe Pelissa, who married in 1930 and made their home on what was then a dairy. The wine is 100% Pelissa fruit, hand-picked, cold-soaked three days, then aged about 20 months in medium-toast French oak, 25% new, landing near 14.9% ABV. Expect red currant, fresh plum, dark chocolate and sweet earth, velvety tannins, a weighty mid-palate and a long espresso-tinged finish. The winery calls it quintessentially Oakville from nose to finish, and critics agree, with James Suckling scoring the 2022 vintage 93 points.
