Maui Brewing Company started in 2005 when Garrett Marrero opened a seven-barrel brewpub in Kahana, Maui, producing just 320 barrels that first year. The flagship trio — Big Swell IPA, Bikini Blonde Lager, and what's now called Coconut Hiwa Porter — first hit aluminum cans in March 2007, and by 2014 the company had outgrown its original facility entirely, moving into a purpose-built, grid-independent brewery in Kihei powered by a 1.2-megawatt solar array, biodiesel generators, and its own CO2 recapturing system. MBC has genuine firsts to its name too: it was the first American brewery to release a coconut beer, a pineapple beer, and a POG (passion fruit, orange, guava) beer, and its Coconut Hiwa Porter took home Gold at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival. Today it's Hawaii's largest independent craft brewery, distributed across roughly 28 states and multiple international markets, with restaurants on both Maui and Oahu. Beyond beer, the 'Ohana now includes Maui Hard Seltzer and Kupu Spirits, a line of ready-to-drink canned cocktails launched in 2019.
