Meukow was born of a Russian commission. In 1850 Tsar Alexander II sent brothers Auguste-Christophe and Gustav Meukow from Silesia to France to secure cognac for the imperial court, and on August 1, 1862 they founded A.C. Meukow in the town of Cognac. The house built its early reputation on exports to Russia and northern Europe before passing, in 1979, into the Coste family's Compagnie de Guyenne, which still owns it today.
In 1993 Michel Coste gave the brand its unmistakable identity: the Felin bottle, embossed with a leaping panther that has become one of the most recognizable silhouettes on any back bar. Since 2007 cellar master Anne Sarteaux, one of very few women in that role in Cognac, has composed the blends. The core range runs from VS through VSOP Superior to XO, with the 90 Proof, Icone and limited panther editions alongside.
Meukow's style draws mainly on Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie, rounded out with Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Borderies, aiming for a balance of strength and suppleness: candied orange, almond, nutmeg and licorice in the younger blends, hazelnut, chocolate and leather as the oak time lengthens.
