Fred L. Myers founded his rum company in Kingston in 1879, and Original Dark has been a bar fixture ever since — the bottle behind more planter's punches, Dark 'n Stormys, and Jamaican rum cakes than almost any other. It's made from 100% Jamaican molasses, distilled using both continuous column and traditional pot stills, blended from as many as nine different rums, and aged up to four years in white oak. Worth knowing honestly: the deep mahogany color comes largely from caramel and molasses added after distillation rather than from barrel time — that's standard for the black rum style and part of what makes it work in a glass. The brand passed through Seagram and Diageo before Sazerac acquired it in 2018, and Sazerac has since expanded well beyond the original bottle: the Signature Cask Collection has produced expressions finished in George T. Stagg and Sazerac barrels, alongside a Guyanese single-origin and a Jamaica-Barbados blend crafted with Drew Mayville and Foursquare's Richard Seale. Expect the house profile throughout — blackstrap molasses, coffee, allspice, dark chocolate, tobacco, and raisin over real Jamaican character. Essential for tiki, cooking, and anywhere a recipe simply says "dark rum."
