Privateer began with a genealogy discovery: software CEO Andrew Cabot, of the storied New England Cabots, learned his sixth great-uncle and namesake was an 18th-century merchant, rum distiller, and privateer — and around 2008 decided to revive the family trade, opening the distillery in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 2011, thirty miles north of Boston where colonial New England's rum industry once thrived. The reputation was built under head distiller Maggie Campbell, who arrived in 2012 from the legendary Germain-Robin brandy house and applied Cognac-style rigor to American rum: six-day fermentations (far longer than typical), a proprietary yeast recipe, real boiled brown sugar, evaporated cane, and Grade A molasses from a single-origin Guatemalan mill growing cane in volcanic soil, distillation on copper, and barreling at a gentle 110 proof so fermentation character survives aging. Nothing is added — no coloring, flavoring, or sweetener — and every bottle states its truth. Forbes credited the operation with leading the American rum resurgence, and tiki legend Martin Cate is among its admirers. The range runs from Silver Reserve and the flagship Amber through Queen's Share, the New England Bottled in Bond (formerly the acclaimed Navy Yard), and adventurous cask finishes like the Laphroaig-casked Sea Smoke.
