Redwood Empire Whiskey takes its name and imagery from California's ancient redwood forests, and conservation runs through the brand's identity — since publicly launching in 2019, the company has helped plant more than 1.8 million trees through reforestation efforts, and its bottles carry real stories behind them: Pipe Dream is named for the 14th largest tree on the planet, while Colonel Armstrong honors the Union veteran who preserved what's now Armstrong Woods, with coordinates on the label leading to the actual 1,400-year-old redwood behind the name. The distillery, which began operations in 2016 and can now fill up to 30 barrels a day, blends its own grain-to-glass spirit with sourced bourbon from undisclosed distilleries across California, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The flagship Pipe Dream comes in standard 90 proof, a stepped-up 101 Proof Reserve, and a Cask Strength edition, all built from barrels aged 4 to 12 years — reception has genuinely varied across reviewers, from real enthusiasm to more measured, "needs refinement" takes. The newer Colonel Armstrong Wheated Bourbon, a high-wheat four-grain expression launched in 2026, represents the brand's most ambitious release yet.
