Robert Craig Winery was founded in the early 1990s by Bob Craig, who had helped develop the Hess Collection on Mount Veeder and became one of Napa's great champions of mountain-grown Cabernet. His idea was simple: small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon from high-elevation sites in each of Napa's mountain appellations. Today the winery is run by his longtime partners the Cadman family, with Stephen Tebb, winemaker since 2003, at the helm.
We carry three Robert Craig Cabernets. Affinity Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the house's signature Bordeaux-style blend from high-elevation sites on Mount Veeder and Moon Mountain, with mineral, graphite and black thorny-vine fruit. The Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon comes from steep, dry-farmed volcanic slopes near 2,000 feet west of St. Helena, aged about 20 months in 80% new French oak, with ferrous minerality, licorice and cedar over firm mountain tannin. The Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon is where Craig made his name, sourced from hillside vineyards between 1,000 and 2,000 feet, showing black currant, blueberry, graphite and dried sage with uncommon density and tension.
