Rothman & Winter is the fruit liqueur line of Destillerie Purkhart, a family distillery in Upper Austria that has been making eaux-de-vie and liqueurs since 1932, and it's a fixture on serious cocktail bars for a reason. Importer Haus Alpenz built the range around one idea: more proof and less sugar than the competition, so the fruit leads instead of the syrup and one bottle stretches across far more drinks. Every liqueur starts with fruit harvested in the alpine valleys around the distillery, and most combine fresh-pressed juice with an eau-de-vie distilled from the same fruit, which is why they taste like the orchard rather than the candy aisle. The Orchard series covers Apricot, the Austrian classic made from Klosterneuburger apricots and the bottle that revived the apricot liqueur category; Pear, Peach, and Cherry; and Quince, the tart, floral one that works in a margarita where triple sec would go. Crème de Violette is the other icon: the violet liqueur that brought the Aviation cocktail back from the dead when Rothman & Winter reintroduced it to the U.S. in 2007.
