Saint James is the oldest rum brand in Martinique and the island's largest distillery. Father Edmond Lefébure founded it in 1765 at the Trou-Vaillant estate above Saint-Pierre, naming it after an English admiral; Marseille merchant Paulin Lambert bought the estate in 1890 and introduced the square, flat-bottomed bottle that still defines the brand. Production moved to a converted sugar factory in Sainte-Marie in 1967, with the current distillery and aging cellars opened in 1974, and La Martiniquaise has owned the house since 2003. Saint James is rhum agricole, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice on six Creole column stills, with about 90% of the cane grown on 275 hectares of estate land, and the house helped write the AOC Martinique rules in 1996.
