The Calling launched in 2012 as a partnership between CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz and Peter Deutsch, CEO of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, two friends who built the brand around the idea of pursuing one's calling. Winemaker James MacPhail, who made his name with Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley, works directly with long-term family growers and brings a careful, hands-on approach to every bottling.
The Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a region where hills block the coastal fog and the Russian River leaves well-drained gravelly soils that suit Cabernet. The 2022 is 100% Cabernet, hand-sorted, fermented on native yeast, given extended maceration to soften the tannins, then aged 18 months in French oak, half new, showing blackberry, blackcurrant, toasted spice, vanilla and dark chocolate with silky tannins. The Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Central Coast, where limestone-laced soils and dramatic temperature swings yield dark, generous fruit with bright acidity, ripe blackberry, mocha and cherry pie, and Wine Enthusiast has consistently scored it 90 points.
