Trailside Vineyard is one of the most talked-about new Napa projects of the decade: a collaboration between Jeremy Seysses, owner and winemaker of Burgundy's Domaine Dujac, and Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr., CEO of Lawrence Wine Estates, the family behind Heitz Cellar. The vineyard sits on the east side of Rutherford, just north of Beckstoffer Georges III, on a historic site that supplied Cabernet to Heitz and Spring Mountain Vineyard in the 1970s and 80s.

Seven distinct soil types, from gravel and volcanic slopes to sandy river benches, are farmed, picked and fermented separately. Seysses applies Burgundian instincts to Cabernet Sauvignon: whole-cluster fermentation with a submerged cap, a traditional pied de cuve starter and aging in vessels ranging from barrique to large foudre, a deliberate break from Napa convention. The result is a Rutherford Cabernet with uncommon perfume, freshness and finesse alongside the appellation's classic dusty structure. The 2022 debut was released in early 2025 by allocation only.
