Leopold Bros. American Small Batch Gin
Leopold Bros. American Small Batch Gin comes from the Leopold family distillery in Denver, Colorado, founded in 2001. Unlike most gins, Leopold's distills each botanical individually, from juniper, orris root, cardamom and coriander to orange and pummelo, then blends the distillates for a softer, brighter, more approachable spirit. It is made from wheat, potato and malted barley, hand-bottled and hand-numbered in batches of about fifty cases, and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).
The Gin Is In rated it 4 out of 5, noting resinous juniper and pine on the nose balanced by vegetal and citrus notes, then a surprisingly warm, weighty palate of pine, herbs and grapefruit pith with subtle spice, and recommended it for herbal Martinis. In 2009 the Wall Street Journal picked it as its favorite in a blind tasting of American gins. A benchmark American craft gin.
