Where to Buy Diplomático Rum Online: Reserva Exclusiva, Mantuano, Planas, and the Distillery Collection

Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva is one of the best-selling premium rums on earth, and the rum that converts more whiskey and cognac drinkers than any other bottle in the shop. It's also the most argued-about rum in the enthusiast world, for one reason we'll get to. This guide covers how Diplomático is made, the honest sugar question, every bottle we have in stock including the Distillery Collection that takes the blend apart, and which to buy.

About Diplomático

Destilerías Unidas has run since 1959 in La Miel, Venezuela, at the foot of the Andes, and it's one of the few rum distilleries anywhere that runs three different kinds of still: copper pot stills, a Canadian-designed batch kettle from the 1950s, and a French Barbet continuous column. Every Diplomático is a blend of what those three produce, fermented from sugarcane honey and molasses and aged in ex-bourbon oak. The label's postage stamp is Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, a well-traveled local rum collector famous for the dinner parties where he poured his finds.

Now the honest part. Master blender Tito Cordero has confirmed that the Reserva Exclusiva includes a touch of cane sugar, and Diplomático has become the reference example of a sweetened rum. Enthusiasts split hard: RumRatings reviewers range from calling it the smoothest, tastiest rum they've ever had to accusing it of mistaking sweetness for age. Both camps are describing the same bottle. If you want bone-dry, go to Flor de Caña or Foursquare. If you want the rum that makes a Scotch drinker say "wait, what is this," you're in the right place, and the drier bottles below exist for exactly the people who find the flagship too much.

Diplomático in Stock at Chips Liquor

Diplomático Mantuano ($30.99)

The drier Diplomático, built for cocktails and for drinkers who find the Reserva Exclusiva too sweet. A blend from all three stills aged up to eight years in ex-bourbon and ex-single-malt oak, 40%: caramel, vanilla, orange peel, baking spice, light tobacco, and a faintly smoky edge from the whisky casks. The workhorse of the range: Rum Old Fashioned, Diplomático and ginger, Mai Tai split, or a rum and Coke that doesn't taste like dessert.

Diplomático Planas ($35.99)

Diplomático with the color filtered out: rum from all three stills aged up to six years, charcoal-filtered clear, bottled at 47%. Because it's aged rum rather than young spirit, it carries more body than most whites: cooked banana, coconut, vanilla, tropical fruit, a hint of cocoa. Not dry or funky, and the right white rum for a Daiquiri, Mojito, or Piña Colada with real weight.

Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva ($44.99)

The flagship: 80% copper pot still, 20% column, aged up to twelve years, 40%. Difford's found sandalwood, leather, chocolate espresso, milk chocolate, licorice, orange peel, brown sugar, and maple. Spirits Review called it a rum you want to drink and wear. For a dessert-rich neat pour, a Diplomático Old Fashioned, a Manhattan riff, or the smoothest rum and Coke of your life. Venezuela's calling card, and the best seller of the range here by a wide margin.

The Distillery Collection: Diplomático Taken Apart

In 2017 the house started releasing each still's rum on its own, aged around six years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 47% in numbered, dated bottles, so drinkers could taste the components of the blend separately. All three are in stock, and the point is to drink them side by side.

  • Distillery Collection No. 1, Batch Kettle ($74.99): the 1950s Canadian still that's neither pot nor column, and the backbone of the Reserva Exclusiva. Cleaner, drier, and more spirit-forward than the flagship; Bespoke Unit found an intensity that shines through where the Reserva Exclusiva can be overwhelmingly sweet.
  • Distillery Collection No. 2, Barbet Column ($81.99): the French column imported in 1959, and the lightest of the three. Floral, vanilla, coconut, white fruit. The component that gives Mantuano its lift.
  • Distillery Collection No. 3, Pot Still ($79.99): the copper pot, the heaviest distillate in the house and the one that gives the flagship its weight. Caramel, dark fruit, cocoa, banana, dried fig, and more texture than its siblings. The Lone Caner calls it the best of the three.

An honest note from the reviewers: the Collection is for people who love the brand and want to understand how it's built, and priced as a collector's set. It's the most interesting gift you can give a Diplomático fan.

Which Diplomático to Buy

  • The one everyone wants: Reserva Exclusiva.
  • Cocktails, or less sweet: Mantuano.
  • White rum with body: Planas.
  • For the fan who has the flagship: Distillery Collection No. 3, or all three.

The Single Vintage 2005 is currently sold out; check the Diplomático collection for current availability.
