Where to Buy Rhum Barbancourt Online: Every Haitian Bottle in Stock, From Three Star to the 15 Year

Barbancourt is Haiti's rum and one of the oldest continuously run rum houses in the Caribbean, and it fits no category neatly. It's made from fresh cane juice like a Martinique agricole, double-distilled the way Cognac is, and aged in French Limousin oak, and the result tastes like none of those things exactly. It's also one of the great values in aged rum: the 15 Year costs less than most 12-year Jamaican or Bajan rums. This guide covers how Barbancourt is made, every bottle we have in stock, and which to buy.

About Barbancourt

Dupré Barbancourt, a Frenchman from the Charente, the Cognac region, finished his rum recipe in Port-au-Prince in 1862, and the house has been run by his wife's family, the Gardères, for four generations since. In 1949 the distillery moved out of the city to the Domaine Barbancourt on the Cul-de-Sac plain, where it grows its own cane. The process is the founder's: fresh-pressed cane juice rather than molasses, fermented with the house's own yeast, distilled to a high proof in a column and then redistilled in copper pots in the Charentais style, cut with filtered rainwater, and aged in French Limousin oak casks. No sugar, no flavoring.

What that produces is lighter and more polished than molasses rum, richer and more caramel-driven than Martinique agricole, and often described as Cognac-like. Barbancourt's own star system (Three Star, Five Star) is a holdover from the Cognac world, and so is the house style.

Barbancourt in Stock at Chips Liquor

Barbancourt Three Star, 4 Year ($27.99)

Haiti's everyday pour and the entry to the aged range: four years in French oak, bottled at 43% ABV. Fresh cane, vanilla, and light citrus on the nose, a smooth palate of caramel, warm oak, and soft tropical fruit, and a clean, dry finish. A bartender favorite for Daiquiris and punches that still has enough polish to drink neat, and probably the most refined four-year-old rum you can buy for under $30.

Barbancourt Réserve Spéciale Five Star, 8 Year ($35.99)

The benchmark, and for many drinkers the definitive introduction to Haitian rum. Eight years in Limousin oak at 43% ABV. Drinkhacker found it surprisingly elegant, with caramel, hogo, red wine must, and butterscotch; Difford's Guide describes treacle giving way to peach, apricot, and overripe banana with milk chocolate on the palate. Paste's honest counterpoint is that it drinks almost like a brandy and is less "rummy" than expected, which is also the reason to buy it. One of the great values in rum for decades. Rum Old Fashioned, Daiquiri, or ice.

Barbancourt Réserve du Domaine Estate Reserve, 15 Year ($64.99)

The top of the classic range. The house says this was reserved for the Barbancourt family alone for about a century before going on sale in the 1960s. Fifteen years in Limousin oak at 43% ABV. The Rum Howler scored it 90.5 and described vanilla, cinnamon, clove, orange peel, dates, apricot, and butterscotch that keep building in the glass; RumRatings drinkers call it the Cognac of rum. Give it fifteen minutes of air before you judge it. Fifteen tropical years for under $70 doesn't exist anywhere else.

Barbancourt Cuvée Liberté ($199.99)

A limited edition marking the 220th anniversary of Haitian independence on January 1, 1804, when Haiti became the first nation founded by a successful slave revolt. Inside is the house 8 Year at 43% ABV; the bottle wears the red and blue of the Haitian flag with sequin-inspired artwork from local craft traditions. A collector's bottle for the occasion it honors, not an upgrade in the glass. We have one.
