Padre Azul Anejo Tequila
Padre Azul Añejo is eighteen months in used bourbon barrels — the Austrian-Mexican tequila with the 270-gram metal skull and the hand-woven leather bottle, at its deepest. H.P. Eder, heir to a Tyrolean schnapps family, launched Padre Azul in 2016 with his Mexican father-in-law after falling in love with a woman from Guadalajara, to bring 100% agave tequila to Europe; the name comes from the expression qué padre — how fantastic — and it's made at Tres Mujeres, NOM 1466, in the lowlands of Amatitán. The Añejo is 100% lowland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked, double-distilled, aged a minimum of eighteen months in previously used American oak bourbon barrels, and bottled at 40% ABV in a hand-blown glass bottle crowned with a hand-sculpted skull and wrapped in hand-woven leather. Sip Tequila: vanilla, cooked agave, bourbon, and toasted oak on the nose, then caramel, oak, cooked agave, and vanilla. Caskers: an extra-long, exceptionally smooth finish. Expect a rich, smooth, sweet palate of caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and bourbon oak. Honest note: the house style is sweet and smooth, and purists read additives — the Añejo is the most barrel-driven of the line, for the bourbon drinker, the gift, and the shelf where the skull will live. Neat, on a big cube, or as a centerpiece. Qué padre, aged.
