Ardbeg 17 Year Old Scotch Whisky Committee Exclusive
Ardbeg 17 is the Committee's 2024 exclusive — a seventeen-year Islay single malt at 40%, the revival of a name Ardbeg fans have mourned since the original 17 was discontinued in the early 2000s. Ardbeg has distilled on Islay's Kildalton coast since 1815 and was rescued by Glenmorangie in 1997 — LVMH owns both now — with Dr. Bill Lumsden directing the whisky; the original Ardbeg 17, made from the sporadic 1980s distillations, was a cult bottle, and the 2024 Committee 17 is its successor — seventeen-year Ardbeg, presumed ex-bourbon, bottled at 40% for members of the distillery's fan club. Drinkhacker, B+: pale gold, a nose simple and medicinal — sea spray and dried kelp — with lemon peel and evergreen on the palate. Expect the Ardbeg lemon-and-smoke signature at seventeen years and a gentle proof — waxy, coastal, herbal, the peat softened to sea air and pine — with a long, clean, saline finish. Honest note: the low proof divides Ardbeg fans and the name carries history — for the Committee collector, the drinker who remembers the original 17, and the person who wants old Ardbeg without cask-strength heat. Neat, in a Glencairn. Ardbeg 17, Committee, 2024.
