Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 Year Batch 5 Scotch Whisky
Traigh Bhan Batch 5 is the 2023 edition of Ardbeg's annual nineteen-year-old — named for the singing-sands beach on Islay, bottled under a full moon — and Drinkhacker graded it B+ for smoky bacon and campfire turning tropical: pineapple, baked apple, Meyer lemon. Ardbeg has distilled on the Kildalton coast since 1815 and was rescued by Glenmorangie in 1997 — LVMH owns both now — with Dr. Bill Lumsden directing the whisky; Traigh Bhan, launched 2019, is the distillery's age-stated annual: nineteen-year Ardbeg from ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, a different proportion each year with the recipe on the label, bottled at 46.2% without chill filtration. Drinkhacker on Batch 5: a nose of smoky bacon and campfire; a palate that develops tropical qualities — pineapple, baked apple, Meyer lemon; and a finish almost tart, with brown sugar underneath — it needs time in the glass, and rewards it. Expect nineteen years of Ardbeg gone soft and fruity — the smoke a frame rather than the picture. Honest note: Traigh Bhan batches are collected like vintages, and Batch 5 is the tropical one — for the Ardbeg collector building the run, and the drinker who wants to taste what two decades do to 55-ppm peat. Neat, in a Glencairn, patience. Traigh Bhan, Batch 5.
