Ardbeg 25 is the oldest whisky in the distillery's permanent range — spirit laid down in the 1990s, when Ardbeg was barely running and nearly closed for good — bottled at 46% without chill filtration. Ardbeg has distilled on Islay's Kildalton coast since 1815, closed in 1981, ran sporadically through the decade, and was rescued by Glenmorangie in 1997 — LVMH owns both now — with Dr. Bill Lumsden directing the whisky; the 25, launched 2020, is drawn from those scarce pre-rescue casks, ex-bourbon matured for a quarter century, and bottled at 46%. The house notes: smoked cream and earthy bonfire with pine and fragrant candle wax on the nose; hot pepper around sherbet lemon with carbolic soap and tar on the palate; and an aftertaste of delicate aniseed, lingering cream, and fudge. The Whiskey Wash's coverage of Ardbeg's older bottlings notes how twenty-five years soften the 55-ppm peat into wax, cream, and pine without losing it. Expect the Ardbeg lemon-and-smoke signature aged into something waxy, creamy, and gentle. Honest note: twenty-five-year Ardbeg from the distillery's near-death years is a collector's bottle and priced as one — for the Ardbeg Committee member, the milestone gift, and the drinker who wants to taste what a quarter century does to Islay peat. Neat, in a Glencairn, on an occasion. Ardbeg, twenty-five years.
