Ardbeg 'Anamorphic' Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Anamorphic is Ardbeg matured in ex-bourbon casks whose heads were deeply scored and intensely charred — a 2023 Committee release at 48.2% — and Drinkhacker graded it B+ for burnt-end barbecue and dying beach-bonfire embers opening into banana, baked apple, and chocolate. Ardbeg has distilled on Islay's Kildalton coast since 1815 and was rescued by Glenmorangie in 1997 — LVMH owns both now — with Dr. Bill Lumsden directing the whisky; the Committee is the distillery's fan club, and Anamorphic — named for the distorted-image lens, with a label that reads right only in a curved mirror — is a Committee-only cask experiment: Ardbeg's 55-ppm spirit in casks with heads cut with deep grooves and charred to an extreme, exposing far more burnt wood to the spirit, bottled at 48.2% without chill filtration. Drinkhacker: a bruising nose of burnt ends and bonfire embers, resting into banana, baked apple, chocolate, and walnut, with lingering tar. Expect Ardbeg's smoke intensified by the char — sootier, sweeter, more dessert underneath — and a long tarry finish. Honest note: Committee releases are the Ardbeg collector's tier — small runs, never repeated — and Anamorphic is the one that shows what cask geometry does; for the completist and the char lover. Neat, with water, time to open. Anamorphic, Committee.
