Spectacular is the first Ardbeg Day release matured in port — peated Islay spirit from Ruby Port pipes married with ex-bourbon, bottled at 46% for Fèis Ìle 2024 — and The Whiskey Wash and VinePair both reviewed it as one of the better recent limited editions. Ardbeg has distilled on Islay's Kildalton coast since 1815 and was rescued by Glenmorangie in 1997 — LVMH owns both now — with Dr. Bill Lumsden directing the whisky; every year the distillery releases a limited edition for Ardbeg Day, and Spectacular was 2024's, carnival-themed. It's Ardbeg's 55-ppm spirit matured in Ruby Port pipes and ex-bourbon barrels, married, and bottled at 46% (the Committee got a higher-proof version) without chill filtration. More Drams, Less Drama, 7 out of 10: silky, with salty-sweet toastiness — peat, eucalyptus, mint chocolate — happily surprised by its quality. Dram1 and Clandestine Whisky both find the port as red fruit and cocoa rather than syrup. Expect Ardbeg's smoke and brine wrapped in raspberry, dark chocolate, and mint, with a sweet-and-salty finish. Honest note: port and heavy peat is a combination that usually fails, and this one works — for the Ardbeg completist and the drinker who wants Uigeadail's sweetness by a different road.
